Introduction

I want to be clear… this is not a “science of the brain” book. This is a “how-to-do-it” book. Everything in this book is based on science, but I’m not going to spend a bunch of time re-hashing the scientific literature so you can become a brain expert. There are a lot of excellent books and scientific studies you can find if you’re interested in that (see the appendix as a good starting point). Instead, the purpose of this book is to say “OK, great. We’ve spent hundreds of years acquiring all this knowledge about how our brain works… but what good is it? How do we use it?” Glad you asked! Because most of us have no idea what is really going on inside our heads. We think we know why we do the things we do, but mostly… we’re just wrong. The truth is a little hard to believe actually and we are, in fact, wired to NOT believe it because, well… you may have noticed a pesky trait of us humans is we have healthy egos. Not YOU of course, but all those other pesky humans and that translates into wanting, in fact insisting, on always being right.  In fact, on a subconscious level, your mind prefers to dismiss any information that offends it’s “rightness”.  Well, not dismiss really, but sort of *bend* the information so it can be interpreted in a way that fits with our previously formed view.  That all happens subconsciously though, so there’s not a lot you can do about it, at least not until you get it.  But once you understand that all the action is really in your subconscious mind, you can learn to harness an incredible power that can change almost anything in your life that you want to change.  You can create a new dynamic with your spouse or your boss.  You can change the way you react to your kid’s difficult behavior and even change their behavior.  Yes, you can lose the weight permanently, actually enjoy exercise (if that’s what you want to do) and create a routine for health that comes easy and stress free, not a struggle, because it really will be “second nature”.   You can keep your New Year’s Resolutions and set incredible Goals and achieve them.  You can be more productive, reduce your stress, overcome your uncomfortableness in social situations and much more.   And as you start using this power to change things, you start understanding better and better how it works and how to use it.  It becomes easier and easier to change other things.  You just know how to do it and when you don’t like something, without really thinking about it, you will start changing it automatically.  Changing things that are difficult to change, automatically… sounds like magic, right?  I hope you’ll take the time to experience a bit of this magic.  The magical and secret workings of the subconscious mind… also known, at least in the pages of this book, as your Monkey Brain.
